Mined from Colombia’s renowned Muzo emerald mine, this exceptional gemstone was mined shortly before being smuggled aboard the Atocha in 1622. On September 6 of that year, the ship was lost in the tragic sinking of the Spanish fleet, consigning its precious cargo to the ocean floor for nearly four centuries.
In 1986, the emerald was recovered by the Mel Fisher salvage team near the famed Atocha Mother Lode area. Following its recovery, the crew carefully tagged and documented the find, and our laboratory staff undertook its conservation. Once fully recorded in our artifact database, the emerald was evaluated by renowned Colombian emerald expert Manuel Marcial de Gomar, who recognized it as one of the highest-quality emeralds ever recovered from the Atocha site.
