The Dutch East India Company ship, the Akerendam was blown off course and sank at the northernmost tip of Runde Island, Norway, on March 8, 1725.

8 Reales Cobs recovered from the Akerendam were struck in the New World mint of Mexico City. Cobs were struck from dies and cut to weight according to the Spanish monetary system.  Minted in five denominations in silver, the largest was the Eight Reales, famous in the colonies and among pirates as a “piece of eight.”
